Call for Submissions 2024

From the daily churn of economic systems to the reclamation of outdoor spaces to the deep inequalities that plague healthcare and legal systems, we are in a moment of reflection but also a moment of action. As a global society, we’ve navigated unprecedented challenges and in the process, we’ve been pushed to rethink many of the structures and boundaries we’ve taken for granted in virtually every sphere — the personal, social, cultural, political, economic, and countless more.

With this graduate student-run journal, we seek to open up channels and allow for broad collaboration between and among researchers from all communities that are in the early stages of their careers or who may be regularly marginalized or delegitimized in standard academic discourse. We seek to engage with inter- and intra-disciplinary dialogues, non-traditional and non-canonical methodologies, ideas across various media, and challenging ideas, approaches, and questions that help to reframe the world as we know it. This journal will create a neurodiverse and anti-ableist, anti-racist, decolonial space in order to allow for multi-faceted and unexpected coalitions.

To that end, we will make space for dynamic work from undergraduate and graduate students, adjunct faculty, independent scholars, practitioners, and artists. Tenure track faculty may be considered only in co-authorship with students or adjunct faculty. 

We invite submissions for the inaugural issue.

Submissions should take inspiration from the first issue’s theme: “Inter(-).” This issue will focus on the liminal or “inter” spaces (intersectional/interdiscipline/intercultural/interpersonal) that music and sound touch in order to invite broad collaboration between and among researchers in early stages of their careers or who may be regularly marginalized or delegitimized in academic discourse.  We encourage engagement with this term in all forms: as prefix or verb, literal or metaphorical, as an indicator of mutuality or as a site for dispute. Submissions may consult with the following non-exhaustive list of possible keywords, topics, and frameworks: interdisciplinarity, intertextuality, interconnection, interments of composers, interments of ideas, internationality, interaction, internal processing, interpositionality, interdependence.

In addition to our efforts to diversify authorship, we also desire to foster an inclusive environment wherein a wide variety of works are featured. Types of works eligible for publication include, but are not limited to:

formal papers, PowerPoint and other visual presentations, recorded lectures and conference presentations, short and long form journalism, op-ed columns, fictional works, poetry, argumentative prose, plays and other narrative writing, journal entries, short films and documentaries, visual art, photography, recordings and scores of original compositions, artist’s statements, program notes, blog-style posts, digital humanities projects, maps, virtual museum-style exhibits, recorded presentations and performances, zines, recorded and/or transcribed conversations and interviews, podcasts, recorded dance performances, comic strips or graphic novel pages, original cooking recipes that accompany recorded lectures or performances, video games, board games, syllabi, lesson plans, project proposals, and critical reviews of published media.

We also encourage the submission of media for review. Any of the aforementioned media, plus any unmentioned, is eligible for review. 

Submissions for this issue will be accepted until 11:59 pm PT on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

Guidelines

  • Written abstracts: no more than 350 words.
  • Audio/Video proposals: no more than five minutes in length
  • Non-traditional formats: use best judgment with a short, summative proposal. This could be in the form of an abstract or written description or some other way to preview the materials for publication.
